The Arsenal

THE ARSENAL

It is in the south of Yeni Cuma District, Boztepe slope. It is known as "Fatih Tower" by Trabzon citizens, "Irene Tower" by foreigners. Although it is pointed out that the building was made in the XIVth century, the date of the Sultan's monogram indicating 1887 proves that it was made during the period of Abdülhamit II.

The building in the Arsenal plan consists of two towers built one inside the other. The central wall occupies four floors, and it is about 25 m heigh. The wall thickness of the building made of hewn stones exceeds 1 metre. The building used to be an arsenal during the Russian Invasion of Trabzon. Its roof blew up with the explosion of the ammunition inside on 9 July 1919, and many people died.

The building has been restored in consistence with its original architectural structure. The location and the architectural style make the building a sight worth seeing.
