HAGIA SOPHIA MUSEUM

Hagia Sophia Museum

It is in the west entrance of the city on the coast way and one of the most important examples of the buildings of Byzantine Era in Trabzon. It is considered to have been built as a church in Komennos Kingdom between 1250-1260. When Fatih Sultan Mehmet conquered Trabzon, in 1573 it was converted into a mosque. Used as a mosque, the building was restored in 1864.

After having been used as a store and military hospital during The World War I, the building served again as a mosque. Between 1958-1962 the building which underwent a basic repair was opened as a museum to be visited. The bell tower, which is 25 meters to the west of the museum, was built in 1947.

Drawing art, stone workmanship, mosaic decoration was used together in the building which is rich in architectural decoration. Although, the inside walls are covered with frescoes, many of them couldn't reach today.

Frescoes can be seen in narthex section very well. In the south frontal, expulsion of Adam & Eve was pictured as a frieze.

During the restoration, especially frescos in the narthex section were found in good condition. On the half dome of abscises, is a picture of The Virgin Mary sitting on the throne, Christ going up to the sky.

On the main dome, the birth of Christ, on the cross, the death of Christ, going to hell and his baptism was illustrated. The Mosaic on Naos is thought to have been made later. In addition to some works from Roman and Byzantine era, some epitaphs and inscriptions are exhibited in its yard.
