HEALTHY CITIES NETWORK

       Due to designation for World Health Organization, Trabzon City has taken part among 76 European cities.

       "Healthy Cities Network" has been started by WHO in 1992, and since this date for progression and development of this network studies have been continued. The network by the time became a growing organization. The Network has about more than 1 thousand members and this number goes up day by day. The project has been going on as phases and right now 4th phase for 2003-2008 period in use.

       Trabzon City to be a member has applied for phase IV (2003-2008) to WHO on September 16, 2005. Membership process has continued until the year of 2007 with the status of applicant. In Turkey "Healthy Cities Union" arranging meetings and organizations for WHO's this project. In January 2007 Trabzon City has designated as member of the WHO. Therefore, Trabzon has participated existing 76 members in Europe.

       To be a healthy city, Trabzon took first step to achieve goal of being a city at European standards. Trabzon city will be a European city.

       This project is very important on the way of achieving a healthier environment and install healthier city infrastructure. Coordinating works of healthy cities is undertaken by Trabzon Municipality. Head of Health Department of the Municipality, Dr. Oguz Karaagacli undertakes all coordinating works of the Healthy Cities actions. Moreover, NGO's, Kradeniz Technical University, Medicine Faculty, Public Institutions supply support for the project.

       "Healthy Cities Project" will supply a method, discipline and new viewing angle for works/studies which have been arranged or planned to be arranged. This viewing angle is "Health". In several world cities local authorities are responsible for health works.
