TRABZON MUSEUM

Trabzon Museum

It is in Zeytinlik Street, on Cumhuriyet main road. The building which has four floors including ground floor was built in the late 19th century by Kostaki Teohplaktos, one of the richest people in Trabzon, an owner of a bank. It is known that most of the materials used in the building, reflecting the European architectural features of the term, were brought from Italy.

Except ground floor, all the floors of the building were ornamented with plaster and pen.

The building, used as headquarters of invading forces during the years 1916-1918 of Russian Invasion was bought by Nemlizades. It was nationalized in 1927, and was used as government office between 1927 -1931 and as The Third General Inspectorships between 1931-37.

After being used as Vocational High School for girls, it was taken over by The Ministry of Culture to be turned into a museum in the same year.

After long restorations, it was opened as Trabzon Museum on 22nd of February, 2001. On his visit to Trabzon between 15th and 17th of September 1924, Atatürk stayed there with his wife Latife Hanım. In the evening of 15th September, he made his speech which is full of praise for Trabzon at the meal given for his honor by Huseyin Kazaz, the Mayor of Trabzon at that time. The room in which Atatürk stayed with his wife has been decorated and opened to public visit.

The ground floor of the building has been decorated as the section of Archaeological and Ethnographic works. In the Archaeological works section, the works of Bronze era, Classic era, Roman and Byzantine era are exhibited. In the Ethnographic works section, the works of Ottoman era, Islamic era and some other local works are exhibited. In this section the most eye catching work is Hermes statue belonging to BC 2nd century which was found in a dig.
