     THE ISKENDER PASHA MOSQUE

Iskender Pasha Mosque

The mosque is located in Meydan square, just adjacent to the municipality building. It was built together with a madrese in 1529 by İskender Pasha, who once used to be the mayor of Trabzon for three times and was renowned for his outstanding achievements in architecture. Later the madrese was damaged in time and the graveyard to the west was removed, leaving only the grave İskender Pasha. Due to the repairs at various times, the originality of the mosque, whose stonework is of a high quality, was destroyed.

The building reflects characteristics of early Ottoman Mosques. The external area for prayers in the north lost its originality through repairs and extensions and then it was covered with a hip roof.

The alter niche and pulpit are of marble. They bear much on 19th century baroque ornamentation. The interior of the mosque is covered with pendentives.

The inner courtyard where one can get after passing through the external area for prayers is surmounted by vaults on the east and west, two columns to the south and a dome resting on the sidewalls. The interior side is illuminated by two rows of windows. The down row has big windows with a circular arch while the upper one has a sharp-pointed arch.

Just over the door of entrance are there two inscriptions, one of which indicating that the mosque was built in 1529 and another informing that the repairs were carried out in 1882.
